Alex van Belkum is currently Scientific Director of Microbiology Research at bioMérieux, a diagnostics company based in the South of France. He is also a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology.

Alex is a microbiologist in the data analytics unit of bioMérieux with a prime interest in next generation sequencing, and the use of other data-rich technologies in clinical microbiology.
His long career has been dedicated to the research of molecular epidemiology, molecular and culture-based diagnostics and antimicrobial resistance testing in clinical microbiology.

Alex has authored more than 530 PubMed-cited papers and has an H-index of 89. He has published five books and is one of the editors of Molecular Microbiology: diagnostic principles and practice published by ASM Press, American Society of Microbiology, Washington. Alex is also the editor-in-chief of the European Journal of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, which had a 2017 impact factor of 2.7.

Alex has worked at the Universities of Leiden and Rotterdam and earned PhDs from both institutes.
