Definition:
The process of deciding which molecule in the bacterial cell is most promising for target-based drug-discovery activities.
A target can be selected on the basis that it is essential for bacterial growth or survival, conserved across all isolates of a bacterial species or several species, selective over the closest human homologues, and presents accessible binding sites for drug-like chemical compounds (referred to as “druggability”).
