Definition:

Resistance that can be shared among bacterial strains and species.

Resistance can arise through mutations affecting the bacterial chromosome or by acquisition of antibiotic resistance genes from another bacterial strain or species for example via plasmids. New mutations affecting the bacterial chromosome can only be transmitted to the offspring of a cell (vertical transmission). Antibiotic resistance genes on plasmids can be transferred to other bacterial strains and species (horizontal transmission).
