Definition:
A supply chain is the sequence of events from sourcing raw materials to delivering the final product to the customer. In the case of medicines, this involves the procurement of raw materials, manufacturing of the finished product, storing and warehousing, transportation and distribution.
Medical supply chains are particularly complex as they involve several stakeholders and entities (e.g. raw material suppliers, manufacturers, suppliers, distributors, logistic partners, retailers), technologies and policies. They are international but dependent on few countries/manufacturers for active pharmaceutical ingredients.
An efficient and well-functioning supply chain is essential to ensure access to medicines and product integrity and safety.
