Definition:

The process by which one or more chemical reactions are performed with the aim of converting a reactant or starting material into a single or multiple products.

Chemists synthesise chemical compounds that occur in nature or they produce compounds that do not form naturally. In industry, synthesis is used to make products in large quantity.
