Definition:
This is therapy that focuses on interfering with bacterial virulence factors instead of central growth pathways to treat a disease.
Drugs used in virulence therapy are called antivirulence drugs. These have been approved for bacterial toxin-mediated diseases. Antivirulence strategies pose unique challenges for drug development and clinical use. They are mainly pathogen-specific approaches and may need to be used as adjuncts to antibiotics.
