Definition:
Viruses are small acellular organisms which are structurally simple, consisting of a core of DNA or RNA as well as a protein coat. They are only able to reproduce by using the cellular machinery of other living organisms. Viruses that can infect and replicate within bacteria are named bacteriophages.
