Alaa Abouelfetouh is a professor of microbiology and immunology at Alexandria University and Alamein International University (AIU), where she co-founded the Technology Transfer Office and leads the “Next Generation Researcher” program.

Her research focuses on genomics-based studies of antimicrobial resistance and virulence in clinical isolates from low and middle-income countries (LMICs), host-pathogen interactions, and the antimicrobial potential of novel and repurposed agents. She also explores the ethical and social dimensions of biomedical research and has contributed to global initiatives such as VOLRETHICS and the Wellcome Trust’s genomics ethics discussions.

Alaa holds a Master’s and a PhD in Pharmaceutical Microbiology from Alexandria University, Egypt. She has held fellowships and research positions, including a Fulbright scholarship at Loyola University Chicago, a Newton-Mosharafa fellowship at the University of East Anglia, and research visits to the Medical College of Wisconsin and the Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland. She collaborates with research groups across Africa, Europe, and the Americas. She has co-advised 13 postgraduate students, published over 90 peer-reviewed papers and conference presentations, and serves on editorial boards and review panels for several international journals and programs.
