Christine Beemelmanns is Professor of Medicinal-Pharmaceutical Microbiota Research at Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS). Her research integrates natural product chemistry, applied microbiology, and organic chemistry and aims to chemically and functionally characterise microbial signalling and defence molecules across different model systems. Analysing ancient and evolved microbial interactions enables her to discover unprecedented chemical core structures with potential pharmaceutical applications.
Prior to this, Christine was appointed Professor of Biochemistry of Microbial Metabolism at Leipzig University. Christine Beemelmanns studied Chemistry at RWTH Aachen University and received her PhD in Organic Chemistry from Freie Universität (FU) Berlin. She then took a position as Junior Research Group leader in Natural Products Chemistry and Chemical Biology at the Hans-Knöll Institute (HKI). In 2020, she was appointed Margaret L. and Harlan L. Goering Visiting Professor of Organic Chemistry at UW-Madison.
