Definition:
A combination regimen refers to the use of two or more medicines administered together as part of the same therapeutic strategy, whether delivered as a single combined product i.e. fixed-dose combination (FDC) or as separate formulations.
In antimicrobial therapy, combination regimens are frequently used to broaden antimicrobial coverage, achieve synergistic activity, reduce the emergence of resistance, or treat polymicrobial infections. These regimens may consist of multiple individual medicines prescribed and dosed independently (“free” or “loose” combinations) or, where appropriate, formulated as an FDC.
