Definition:

Testing for compounds that have antibacterial properties (hits), for example by high-throughput screening of compound libraries.

Hits are an important starting point in drug discovery and development. However, they may require considerable chemical modification to enhance their antibacterial activity and other properties. Very few initial hits become antibiotics licensed to treat infections.
