This webinar will showcase the importance of clinical trials after licensing antibiotics by demonstrating two major trials taking place.
Presentation 1: Trials for antibiotics against Gram-positive bacteria (Steven Tong)
The Staphylococcus aureus Network Adaptive Platform (SNAP) trial is a pragmatic, comparative effectiveness trial of treatment strategies for patients with S. aureus bacteraemia (SAB). Key elements of SNAP include scale (enrolling at >120 sites), an engaged clinical community, asking priority questions, and a flexible platform which also allows multiple questions to be asked in parallel.
Presentation 2: Trials for antibiotics against Gram-negative bacteria (Patrick Harris)
Registration trials for new MDR–GNB active drugs rarely provide data applicable to the patient populations of greatest clinical need. Industry experience with MDR pathogen-directed RCTs has been disappointing and recruitment has proved very challenging. When drugs are approved, cost and lack of availability preclude their use in parts of the world where they are needed most. Market failure has been a common occurrence for new antibiotics. We need to seek innovative solutions, including investigator-industry partnerships, and dialogue with policy-makers in parts of the world where disease burden is greatest to provide solutions to this global crisis.
